“Good habits is what makes you successful.”
“Discipline is the foundation of success.”
These beliefs sound good, but they actually cause men a lot of heartache and make success MORE difficult.
-
If our why is to work hard and be disciplined because that’s what men do, we are like the waves of the sea. Coming in with a lot of force, but fading away as we move onto dry land.
Hard work and discipline without a meaningful why can’t stand the challenges that come upon it.
Strong beliefs, and whys have to be the foundation first. Then hardwork and discipline are a byproduct of that foundation. They are fruits of the root, which is vision and whys aligned to your core values.
Resilience can now have anchors.
Discipline can now be created because it has a foundation to flow from.
Discipline in of itself can never be a root. That is what we miss in all of our teaching to men today.
Men put their identity in their discipline, and when that fails, men then see themselves as failures.
This is why men go through periods of depression and anxiety. It is God and the universe pulling men back to the source of who they really are.
Jim Carrey said this on depression: “Depression is your body telling you it’s tired of the avatar you’re trying to play.”
If we aren’t aligned to who we really are, we don’t have a strong enough foundation to withstand the challenges of life. We won’t experience the joys of service and impact we can truly make. The divinity within us as men.
We must align to our authentic selves, our core values and natural strengths, to find our why, and have discipline, hard work, and resilience as the fruits of that foundation.
